Upon returning to Los Angeles in 2008, Skip Heller went not back to the jazz world where he'd earned a ton of critical respect, but instead to Bakersfield, California's honky tonk capitol, playing country music with upright bassist Paul Eckman and drummer Dale Daniel. The trio recorded THE LONG WAY HOME (the first 10 tracks here) in Eckman's apartment. Producer Mark Linett (the Beach Boys guy) came on board to help Skip finish it, and the reviews said things such as, "There just aren’t many people this soulful. The Long Way Home is the album he’s always been destined to make. Heller’s vocals are the equal of his playing, but in so many it’s the songwriting that shines the brightest of all. In a period when roots music seems to have run a bit ragged, too often repeating itself or failing to shoot for the sky, Skip Heller doesn’t let himself off the hook. Songs like “I Used to Love California,” “Falling for You” and “When I Come to Pledge My Heart” are new classics, no matter if the world ever finds out or not. "

LWH was followed by some very short run CDRs that we're never pressed up or anthologized, but whose contents are included here. Most of what was one the first Hollywood Blues Destroyers disc, came from those discs. Mostly, the stuff has been unavailable for the last few years. But Bandcamp has made it easy.
